LAS3R field campaign, Aboa, Antarctica, 2022-23: Snow pit, AWS5, albedo, RGB drone mosaics, surface roughness and elevation

Description

Measurements were conducted during Finnish Antarctic Research Programme (FINNARP) 2022 expedition to Finnish Aboa station located in Dronning Maud Land in western Antarctica. The field measurements were made weekly at AWS5 weather station (−73.105034S, −13.162370W), approximately 10 km from Aboa station, and at different satellite overpass locations on pre-checked GPS routes typically 5-35 km from the station. In total 8 measurement occasions were made at AWS5 site and 16 measurements at different IceSat-2 and CryoSat-2 satellite overpass locations between November 2022 and February 2023. Measurements included snow surface roughness observed with a drone-based laser scanner and a backpack-based laser scanner, radiation observations on the ground, radiation observations on a drone, snow pit measurements, and meteorological measurement at the weather station.

This data set includes data from the snow pits (date, time, location, coordinates, stratigraphy, hardness, wetness, grain size, grain type, density, temperature, liquid water content, specific surface area, depth of measurements), data from the automatic weather station (AWS5) maintained by FINNARP (date and time, air temperature, distance between sensor and snow surface, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, albedo, long- and shortwave incoming radiation, long- and shortwave outgoing radiation, long- and shortwave net radiation), albedo data from Eppley and CM14 radiation stations (shortwave broadband albedo, up- and downwelling shortwave radiative flux, solar zenith angle, solar azimuth angle, coordinates), albedo data from drone (shortwave broadband albedo, downwelling shortwave radiative flux, solar zenith angle, coordinates), RGB drone image mosaics, and surface roughness and elevation derived from the laser scanner data.

Hyperspectral camera data is available on request.

The data set is related to manuscript on "Measurements on physical snow properties in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica".
