Description

This dataset gives information about modelled significant wave height events exceeding 2.5 m, 4 m and 7 m over the Baltic Sea. The maximum value of significant wave height of each event where given threshold is exceeded is saved together with the time and duration of the events (as hours since 1/1/1993). Also, peak period and corresponding direction of the waves is given at time of maximum wave height. Dataset is calculated for time period of 1/1/1993 to 31/12/2021 from Baltic Sea Wave Hindcast by Copernicus Marine Services (https://doi.org/10.48670/moi-00014). Results are published in article "Event-based wave statistics for the Baltic Sea" (https://doi.org/10.5194/sp-2023-16).

Methods

Methods of calculating event-based statistics is described in the linked article (https://doi.org/10.5194/sp-4-osr8-10-2024) published in Ocean State Report 8. Scripts used for this paper are under Exceedance_analysis.tar. Latest version of the scripts is available at (https://github.com/hkanarik/Exeedance_analysis/). Scripts include methods to produce the dataset and examples on producing the figures for the publication.

Table of contents

Exceedance_analysis-main.zip: Python scripts for producing the dataset and creating the figures. For detailed info of the scripts read included README.md. VHM0_exceendaces*over_1timestamps_199301-202112.nc.gz: Netcdf files with information on exceedance events. Each exceedance level is given in a separate file. As files with 2.5 m exceedance are so large, the file has been divided to different sea areas. Variable names are explained under Metadata info. CaseStudy-file only includes small area in southeastern Bothnian Sea for cases exceeding 1 m significant wave height, presented in the article chapter 3.3.5 Coastal case study. Statistics_exceedance_over_*m.nc: Netcdf files with statistics presented in the article (calculated from VHM0_exceendaces* -files).
