Data of BVOC emissions measured by Vocus PTR-TOF MS from birch and the environmental parameters

Description

Ions Identified By Vocus.csv contains the information of ions identified by Vocus from the emission of the downy birch tree. It consists of the m/z value, mass defect and molecular formula. The mass defect plot seen in the paper uses data from this file. Emission Rate.csv file contains the emission rates of 49 ions that are further discussed in the paper. The emission rates are converted from the raw data measured by the Vocus. The conclusions drawn and mentioned in the article use the data from this file. The gaps seen in the dataset are points of calibration which have been removed to include only the emissions observed by Vocus. Environmental Parameters.csv file consists of environmental parameters measured inside the branch chamber. Ambient Parameters.csv file consists of environmental parameters observed in the ambient environment in Hyytiälä. It was downloaded from FMI open weather data. The ambient weather data was taken from https://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/download-observations on 22-04-2021. All the time series data has a time resolution of 20 minutes.

FMI metadata

Process step
The emission data were recorded with a time resolution of 5s using TofDaq Recorder provided by Tofwerk AG, Thun, Switzerland. The data were processed using the software package Tofware developed by Tofwerk AG, that enables mass calibration, baseline subtraction and molecular formula assignment to the identified ions. The application runs in the Igor Pro environment (Wavemetrics, OR, USA). The raw cps was then converted to ppb using the calibration values. The concentration in ppb was converted to emission rate and then averaged to 20 minutes. Further statistical analyses of the data were done in Excel and Python.

The ambient parameter dataset was downloaded from FMI open weather data. URL: https://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/download-observations. It was accessed on 22-04-2021.
Lineage
The sampling of BVOC emissions was similar to that used by Hellén et al. (2021). Air from zero air generator was made to flow into the chamber and the outlet from chamber was directed to the Vocus PTR-.TOF-MS to identify and quantify BVOC emissions from the birch. A Philips KTY 80/110 was used to record the temperature and relative humidity in the chamber. The photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was recorded on top of the enclosure using a quantum sensor (LI-190SZ, LI-COR, Biosciences, Lincoln, USA). The Vocus was automatically calibrated every three hours using a calibration gas tank (Apel Riemer Environmental Inc.) containing 16 different compounds
