NWP model data (ECMWF IFS) for Pentikäinen et al. (2022) "Evaluating wind profiles in a numerical weather prediction model with Doppler lidar"

Description

This dataset contains vertical columns of u and v winds (eastward and northward winds) from the operational global model: Integrated Forecasting system (IFS) operated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), for the 6 locations evaluated in the manuscript (Pentikäinen et al. 2022, submitted to GMD).

Methods

Hourly wind values were extracted for all model levels (137 levels) from the 12Z run for the t+12 to t+35 hour forecast range over 6 locations. The data was obtained from MARS and then post-processed to meet the Cloudnet format convention (http://cloudnet.fmi.fi), which also ensures that the netCDF format (https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/) has standard names meeting the Climate and Forecast metadata conventions (https://cfconventions.org/). This processing step also calculated the heights for the model levels which follow a hybrid vertical coordinate system.

Table of contents

6 archive files (in tar.gzipped format) are provided, one for each location. Each archive file contains daily files which are in the self-describing netCDF format.
