Description
This dataset contains the code and data accompanying the article: Partanen et al. (2026). A new approach to determine national greenhouse gas budgets. Environmental Research Letters. https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/ae9628
Files included:
README.md — Full documentation: repository structure, installation instructions, how to run the analysis, and descriptions of all input and output files. Read this first.
ghgbudgets.zip — Python analysis code (scripts 00–12, sensitivity analyses, shared modules) and input datasets. Requires Python 3.10 and FaIR v2.2.4; see README.md for the full environment specification and instructions for downloading the FaIR calibration archive and one large external input file not included here.
output.zip — Pre-computed outputs: processed emission time series, FaIR ensemble temperature outputs, normalisation factors, Monte Carlo samples, and GHG budget estimates. Download this to use the results without rerunning the computationally expensive FaIR ensembles (several hours on a modern laptop).
figures.zip — All figures used in the paper plus additional diagnostic plots.
The analysis pipeline interpolates Finnish non-CO2 GHG emission time series, runs a 841-member constrained FaIR v2.2.4 ensemble to compute the warming contributions of non-CO2 GHGs at Finnish and global level, and processes LULUCF indirect effects at both levels. These are combined via Monte Carlo sampling to compute national GHG budgets under three conventions that differ in whether and where adjustments to derive GHG budgets compatible with National GHG Inventories are applied: for GWP100 aggregation bias and LULUCF indirect effects at global level, at national level, or not at all. See README.md for full details.
