This file contains information on the contents of the NorESM1-Happi post-processed output data related to the manuscript Räisänen et al. (2022): Räisänen, P., Merikanto, J., Makkonen, R., Savolahti, M., Kirkevåg, A., Sand, M., Seland, Ø., and Partanen, A.-I.: Mapping the dependence of BC radiative forcing on emission location and season, Atmos. Chem. Phys., submitted, 2022 The data is provided in seven zip files: REAL_experiment_all_data.zip ANN_experiments.zip DJF_experiments.zip MAM_experiments.zip JJA_experiments.zip SON_experiments.zip other_experiments.zip Their contents are briefly described below: *************************************************************************** 1) REAL_experiment_all_data.zip This zip file contains all post-processed data for the experiment REAL with realistic black carbon (BC) emissions. There are a total of 36 files, including 18 NetCDF data files (either in .nc or .nc2 format) and corresponding 18 .ctl files for using these NetCDF files in GrADS (http://cola.gmu.edu/grads/). The .ctl files include a listing of the variable names, which is too long to be repeated here. The file names can be interpreted as following: - SURF: 2-dimensional (xy) data from the atmosphere model CAM4-Oslo. - HYBF: 3-dimensional (xyz) data from the atmosphere model CAM4-Oslo - LND: 2-dimensional (xy) data from the land surface model CLM4 - ICE: 2-dimensional (xy) data from the sea ice model CICE4 - mean: averages over the five-year period 2013-2017 - annual_cycle: average monthly climatology for 2013-2017 - yearly: annual-mean values for 2013-2017 (5 years) - monthly: monthly-mean values for 2013-2017 (60 months) - CAM_h1_timeseries: daily values of selected variables from CAM4-Oslo - CLM_h1_timeseries: daily values of selected variables from CLM4 The horizontal resolution of these files is 144 x 96 gridpoints (grid spacing ca. 1.9 x 2.5 degrees), and in the HYBF files, there are 26 files in the vertical. Note that because the aerosol scheme in NorESM1-Happi was run in an offline mode, most of these variables (e.g., the meteorological conditions) are repeated identically to REAL in the other experiments, irrespective of what was assumed about black carbon emissions. *************************************************************************** 2) The six files ANN_experiments.zip DJF_experiments.zip MAM_experiments.zip JJA_experiments.zip SON_experiments.zip other_experiments.zip contain selected data related to BC in all experiments listed in Table 1 of Räisänen et al. (2022). Here, the first five zip files contain data for the "idealized" experiments, so that each of them has data for 192 experiments corresponding to the 192 emission regions (lat-lon boxes) in Räisänen et al. (2022). ANN stands for the experiments with BC emissions occurring throughout the year, and DJF/MAM/JJA/SON to experiments with BC emissions confined to a single season. Finally "other_experiments.zip" contains data for the other experiments listed in Table 1 of Räisänen et al. (2022). For each experiment, there are five data files in NetCDF format (and five corresponding .ctl files for GrADS): DATA_2D_ATM_mean.nc DATA_2D_LND_mean.nc DATA_3D_ATM_mean.nc DATA_2D_ATM_annual_cycle.nc DATA_2D_LND_annual_cycle.nc As above, "mean" refers to average values over the years 2013-2017, and "annual_cycle" refers to the monthly climatology for the same period. The variables in the DATA_2D_ATM files were picked from the SURF files, DATA_3D_ATM from the HYBF files, and DATA_2D_LND from the LND files discussed above. The following variables are included: DATA_2D_ATM_mean.nc & DATA_2D_ATM_annual_cycle.nc: 14 variables -------------------------------------------------------------- c_bc BC column burden [kg m-2] dry_bc BC dry deposition [kg m-2 s-1] emi_bc BC Emissions [kg m-2 s-1] fsns_aie Surface absorbed solar flux (dirIND) [W/m^2] fsns_all Surface absorbed solar flux (BC in snow+air) [W/m^2] fsns_nobcair Surface absorbed solar flux (no BC in air) [W/m^2] fsns_nobcsnw Surface absorbed solar flux (no BC in snow) [W/m^2] fsnt_aie Total column absorbed solar flux (dirIND) [W/m^2] fsnt_all Total column absorbed solar flux (BC in snow+air) [W/m^2] fsnt_nobcair Total column absorbed solar flux (no BC in air) [W/m^2] fsnt_nobcsnw Total column absorbed solar flux (no BC in snow) [W/m^2] landfrac Fraction of sfc area covered by land [fraction] ps Surface pressure [Pa] wet_bc Wet deposition [kg m-2 s-1] Above, "dirIND" refers to dagnostic radiation calculations for determining the indirect effect of aerosols.
